Liquids can be heavier or lighter than each other. We found that syrup is heavier than water and that water is heavier than cooking oil! We then dropped in a coin, a grape and a piece of sponge.
We then did a quick second experiment and separated water and cooking oil. It was interesting to watch the food colouring work through both liquids.
